Determined to give my physical shell a good de-clutter, I
book a haircut in a new hair salon in town. The reviews say there’s no
talking about the latest gossip or uncomfortable conversations about bikini
waxes, which suits my awkwardness around small talking. At my arrival I am
greeted with a cup of tea and a little biscotti. I sip the tea slowly as the
biscotti rests on its plate staring at me the whole time.
Alex, the handsome
hair stylish is stressed, as his previous customer is not happy with her curls.
Another hairdresser takes over and as she sits her fancy bum on the chair beside
me, she wishes me good luck. I reply: ‘Aw thank you, I will never look as good
as you though.’ She gazes back with a confused expression on her face while
Alex gives a wink and the best haircut in a long time.
The glamorous feeling doesn't last long as Alex’s
masterpiece is ruined by strong gusts of wind and rain which my umbrella fails
to protect me from.
Following an afternoon of art exhibitions and more tea, I am
tempted by the fresh brownies in the coffee shop and crave hot chocolate but by
shifting my attention to chatting with the girls and the charming bartender, I
manage to resist both. I think the trick is to keep busy and carry on.
In case the yearnings return when I am at home where I have no
one to distract me, I buy liquorice and oriental spices tea which is perfect for
the winter and has warm and uplifting properties; and the cinnamon is said
to fight cravings.
At a friend’s gathering on this very cold Saturday night I order
a hot Todd - whiskey mixed with water, lemon and cloves. The drink comes to the
table and I am told, ‘I have already added sugar’. Ah this starts well! I ask for
honey instead but no luck and end up drinking a plain Todd, which is bitter to
the palate.
Through online research I learn that pure whiskey, Rum,
vodka and gin don’t contain sugar but the mixers are the tricky part as they all
seem to have high contents of added sugars or artificial sweeteners.
Suddenly everyone thinks I am on a diet with all the fuss
around sugar but I clarify that more than a diet, this is a bet and I like to
win!
